Dear Mr. Hellman:
Additional information in regards to the subject building's existing foundation system has been
made available to our offices (R.J. Moon, Inc., 1981). Based on our review of the provided docu-
ments, we understand that concrete cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) belled piles (referred to as caissons
in the referenced notes and drawings) underlie the north building wall. Additionally, these caissons
extend down to a bearing level that correlates to an elevation below the existing adjacent retaining
wall to the north. However, based on the findings from our project geotechnical report (Ninyo &
Moore, 2015), these caissons do not extend down into formational materials as recommended in
our project geotechnical report. Accordingly, the new CIDH piles to be installed along the northern
building wall should be placed at midpoint between the existing caissons. As recommended in our
project geotechnical report, new CIDH piles constructed along the north and west wall building
foundations should extend through the existing fill materials and be embedded 5 feet or more into
competent formational materials. During installation of the new CIDH piles, the elevation of the
geologic contact to the formational materials will be evaluated for the potential reduction of the
number of piles based on the locations and depths of the existing caissons. The recommendations
in our geotechnical report referenced above are still valid and applicable.
